Motherhood Photographer in Morris County, NJ
Having someone you aren't familiar with come into your home for an intimate motherhood session could be pretty stressful if it's your first experience. But, it doesn't have to be!
Here are a few tips to make sure your motherhood session is enjoyable, giving you images you'll cherish for a lifetime.
Communicate with your Photographer.
Communication with your photographer is SO important. It builds trust and helps establish a rapport before you ever even meet. Be sure to discuss any concerns or insecurities you might have, what you're hoping to get out of your session, etc. etc. All these conversations help the photographer understand how to best tell your unique story and put you at ease. I'm in close contact with clients leading up to their sessions, but if your photographer hasn't reached out to you prior, don't be afraid to ask for a quick chat! It will definitely help everything go smoothly.
The mama in the session featured in this blog expressed to me that it was important to capture the nursing journey with her third and last baby, as it was something she was really cherishing. She was also returning back to work, and this session was a little gift to herself to remember how special her leave had been, being home with her three boys. These conversations definitely gave me a framework for knowing what I was going to be looking for and focusing on going into their session!
Less is More.
Less is more is a great rule of thumb when it comes to both location and wardrobe for your motherhood session. All you truly need to get magical images is a clear corner near a window. That's it! Don't go crazy cleaning your entire house or stressing where you'll take the photos. I always appreciate when clients send me some photos of areas in their house ahead of time, just so I know what I'm walking into. Either way, your photographer will always peak around when they get to your home to see where the best location will be, anyway.
When it comes to wardrobe, stick to simple, neutral colored outfits from natural textiles (cotton, linen, etc). The focus of your motherhood session is the connection between you and your babies, so the clothing should be simple as possible. If you're breastfeeding, something that allows baby easy access to nurse is always best. Ask your photographer for help if you're unsure what to wear. I provide complimentary personal shopping guides for every session, so this is definitely something we'd discuss ahead of time!
This mama opted for simple bottoms for her boys and a bodysuit/sweater combo for herself. Since the focus of her session was skin to skin and breastfeeding, the wardrobe for this motherhood session allowed us to get beautiful, intimate images.
Have Realistic Expectations.
Babies get fussy and children have minds and opinions of their own for how willing they'll be to participate. But guess what? It's all okay. I promise your photographer has seen it all and won't be thrown off if things don't go perfectly or you need to take a few breaks. It's our job to capture the beauty of your life in the moment, and that includes being patient through whatever meltdowns or resistance may occur. Having three kids of my own, there isn't much I can't handle and I will definitely follow your child's lead to make things as stress free as possible for you.
If there's one thing I know will set you up for success, though...it's to make sure your kiddos are fed before your session starts. Full bellies always equal more willing cooperation (and the same could definitely be said for us grown ups, right?!). This usually always ensures we at least start off of in a good way!
What this beautiful mama had to say about her session....
"I cannot recommend Brianna enough. She carries an unparalleled talent for capturing life's real moments in the most stunning way. She made me feel so comfortable in front of the camera and was so patient with my three (wild) boys who were not always cooperative. Despite having to wrangle two boys and a baby, she captured a wealth of incredible photos that I will treasure forever. Her talent is a true gift to all her clients."
